You could say there was a fairly big royal event that took place this week in Denmark. Just a new King and Queen, not a big deal. But other than that rather significant event, what did other royals get up this week?

The Netherlands:

The Dutch royals were quietly busy this week. Queen Máxima attended the World Economic Forum in Davos this week as a special advocate of the UN Secretary-General. She has attended the WEF for 15 years now and spoke about inclusive financing. The focus of her work here is on promoting digital finance and the inclusion of those in disadvantaged positions the opportunity to improve their financial future.

King Willem Alexander visited several businesses at the Porte of Zwolle. The visit was focused on the economic development and administration of the businesses in the area. He spoke with students doing internships and business owners, particularly of a truck company and as you can see above, a boating company.

The King and Queen also hosted a New Years Eve reception for many different areas of Dutch society. Princess Beatrix and Princess Margriet were also there!

Queen Silvia attended a conference about Alzheimer’s disease. She presented a speech, and learned about the different challenges of treatment.

King Carl XVI Gustaf visited the construction site of E4 Pass Stockholm. Forgive me, I’m not familiar with Swedish traffic construction, but as I understand it, this is a very large tunnel system being built but the completion date isn’t for a few years.

The King also visited the Defence Academy alongside his daughter, Crown Princess Victoria.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra has started military training with the Engineer Battalion. The press were present for a lesson where she learned how to put together and take apart weaponry.

The King and Crown Prince also held a number of audiences with several dignitaries and ambassadors. Crown Prince Haakon also visited the National Police Emergency Response Centre as well as Norway’s largest pension company, but I have had a difficult time finding any photos.

United Kingdom:

The Duchess of Edinburgh visited the Katherine Low Settlement, which is a centre aiming to reduce poverty and isolation by being a space for the community to come together. Why she had pompoms here, I’m not entirely sure!

She also visited Walton Charity, which focuses on many of the same issues as the Katherine Low Settlement. She helped sort through food donations and helped create food packages as well.

Queen Camilla was also on hand to open a new safe space at Aberdeen Art Gallery. This space aims to support those that are dealing with domestic violence at home. This is an area that Camilla has been focusing on for a long time now.

It was also announced that both the King and the Princess of Wales are dealing with some health issues. The King is undergoing treatment for an enlarged, but benign, prostate and as the Queen said during her visit in Aberdeen, he is doing just fine. The Princess of Wales had a successful abdominal surgery, however the recovery time is long, and she will be out of commission for the next few months.

Jordan:

The King of Jordan visited the army serving in the Eastern Military Region. The visit had a focus on reviewing training, operational duties, and development plans.

The Emperor and Empress also attended the 150th anniversary of the Metropolitan Police Department. They also met with the heads of special rescue teams that have been working in the areas impacted by the Noto Peninsula earthquake.

Luxembourg:

Grand Ducal Family

We did get a bit of sparkle this week; the Grand Ducal Family of Luxembourg held their New Years reception last night. The photos are not great, but Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Belgian scroll tiara, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore Grand Duchess Amélie’s tiara, and Princess Alexandra wore the vine leaves tiara, which is a first for her!

In less sparkly news, the Grand Duke and Hereditary Grand Duke attended the inauguration of Solarcells, a solar panel production plant.
